Essential Oils for Bruises

Bruises are no fun. They hurt, can be ugly, and are just difficult. A bruise is the collection of blood up near the surface of the skin after damaged blood vessels release the blood. This is generally the result of some force being applied, generally by being hit or bumping into something. There are some essential oils for bruises that can both help relieve the discomfort and reduce the visible bruise.

Essential Oils for Bruises

As with many other conditions, essential oils can help here! You can apply many of these oils topically, either once the bruise appears or immediately after the injury or impact occurs. Check out our seven favorite essential oils for bruises below.

rosemary essential oil

1. Rosemary

Rosemary is a wonderful oil which contains several antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. This means rosemary can help regulate the immune response to a bruise and lower the inflammation caused. When the inflammation is lessened, the body can heal more quickly. Rosemary essential oils can be diluted with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil and applied directly to the skin where you are bruised. You can also add a few drops to a bath and submerge the part of the body directly into the warm water to help heal more quickly!

2. Geranium

Geranium is an oil that I have used quite a bit recently. It has a lot of wonderful uses, one of which is increasing circulation in the body. Geranium essential oil stimulates blood flow, which may cause an initial increase in inflammation. However, the increase in blood flow can help the body to heal more quickly and rid itself of the bruise. Without diluting, geranium oil can be irritating to the skin. Make sure to dilute it with a carrier oil and test it on your feet before applying anywhere else on the body.

3. Lavender

Lavender is one of the most popular essential oils and has many powerful benefits from promoting relaxation and aiding sleep to helping sore muscles. Lavender can help prevent bruising from occurring or worsening, especially when applied immediately after the injury is sustained. It prevents blood from collecting in the area of the bruise, and it’s possible to steer clear completely of even bruising! Just put a few drops of pure lavender oil directly on the area where you were impacted, and continue to apply every few hours.

4. Helichrysum

Helichrysum is a powerful essential oil that can help stimulate blood vessels. This is useful in working with bruises. When you think you’re going to have a bruise, you can apply helichrysum right away. This stimulates the blood vessels to encourage healing and recovery at the location. Stimulating circulation at the spot where a bruise may arise can help the body go through the bruising and healing process much more quickly. You can apply helichrysum oil directly to the site of the bruise in the hours following impact, and continue to apply it a couple times a day for a few days after.

cypress5. Cypress

Cypress is a super effective essential oil for bruising. It prevents the pooling of blood by encouraging healthy blood circulation. This is especially helpful when applied topically in the minutes or hours after sustaining impact. You can put some cypress oil directly on the skin, which may have the added benefit of soothing the pain of the bruise. You can also dilute this oil and apply with a roller regularly to help the discomfort.

6. Lemongrass

Lemongrass, or cymbopogon, is a type of tropical grass common in Asia and India. Lemongrass has analgesic properties, meaning it can help reduce pain and discomfort when applied topically. Furthermore, lemongrass can help reduce swelling, which leads to faster healing times. You can put a few drops of lemongrass essential oil in your favorite carrier oil and apply directly to the skin. For added benefit, try really massaging the lemongrass into the skin to relieve discomfort of bruising.

7. Frankincense

Frankincense essential oil is one of the most powerful and popular essential oils. It is one of the most widely-used essential oils available, and has a long history of use. You can apply frankincense oil directly to the bruise to reduce the visible bruise and discoloration. It is one of the oils known to be safe for children and very few people have allergic reactions to it!
