About Coriander Essential Oil
Coriander essential oil comes from the plant coriander sativum, an herb in the Apiaceae family which includes carrots, celery, cumin, dill, fennel, parsley, and many more vegetables and herbs which humans eat and use. Coriander oil comes from the seeds of the plant, while the leaves of the plants are often known as cilantro. Coriander is native to southern Europe and southwestern Asia, although it may be grown in many climates.
Coriander is known to have many uses. Coriander essential oil contains linalool, alpha-pinene, and gamma-terpinene. Linalool has been found to have anti-cancer effects as well as strong anti-inflammatory properties. Alpha-pinene is an anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and bronchodilator. Gamma-terpinene is an anti-microbial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory.
Coriander Essential Oil Uses
There are many uses for coriander oil. It can be used internally, topically, or aromatically. Some people may have a sensitivity to coriander oil directly on the skin. Before applying it to the skin directly, dilute it and try some on the feet to make sure you do not have any sensitivity to the oil. Here are a few ways we can use coriander to help us.
Coriander essential oil has been found to increase libido and help with impotency. Coriander stimulates the body in a way that increases the release of hormones through the endocrine gland. This can increase libido and also help with pain, cramping, and bloating during menstruation. You can take some coriander with your tea or on your favorite food to get these effects moving into the body!
The gamma-terpinene and linalool in coriander both help make it an essential oil that can relieve pain. As an anti-inflammatory and analgesic, coriander can help with muscle and joint pain especially. This may not help cure or treat the actual problem as well as other oils may, but it will reduce the symptom of pain and discomfort. You can apply coriander topically directly to the location where you are experiencing pain, or drop it in a bath if you are not sensitive to the oil.
Coriander essential oil can help relieve gas and bloating. When taken internally, coriander can reduce any gas you have, and help prevent the formation of further gas. This is great after a heavy meal, during menstruation, and when experiencing a minor food sensitivity. You can put a drop or two in your water or tea to help relieve gas, especially at nighttime before going to bed!

Coriander and cilantro have bronchodilator properties. This means they open up the airways and can help us breathe more easily. This is especially useful if you have a cough or suffer from asthma. Taking some coriander oil internally or rubbing it directly on the chest and throat can help open up our airways and breathe a little more deeply.
Coriander essential oil promotes lipolysis, or the hydrolysis of lipids. What this means is that coriander can help the body break down fats and cholesterol. By taking coriander internally, we can break down unhealthy fats and cholesterol to help the body increase metabolism and make it more effective. This can help us maintain weight or lose weight, and also has many added health benefits.
Coriander for Diabetes
Many people don’t realize this, but coriander can actually help with diabetes! A 2009 study found that coriander oil can help rats fight against diabetes. It worked by reducing blood sugar level and activating the pancreas. Although this may not entirely cure diabetes in a human, it is a helpful oil to use to aid in the management of this difficult disease.

Coriander is full of Vitamin C and antioxidants which are great for hair, skin, and nails. As an antibacterial and antifungal, it can help keep everything healthy and looking clear.
